Description
In September 1957, following the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision, nine courageous African American students integrated the formerly segregated Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. The actions of those nine brave students were key in ensuring the implementation of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Brown, and would forever change how we define equity within our system of public education. Since that time, we have continued to strive as a country to develop an equitable and strong public education system that can serve all students well. However, concerns continue to mount that there are too many barriers to equal access and not enough students are receiving the education they deserve.
What does the data say about student achievement and success in our public schools and that of alternative choices such as private and charter schools? How are these schools providing greater access and opportunity for the growing New Majority of Black and Brown students and others from historically marginalized communities? How do school funding structures and governance strategies influence how communities are able to inform the learning of their students?
Forging a successful path forward for our children will require evidence-based solutions that elevate sound practices and transform them into equitable policies. In the wake of the 2018 mid-term elections, bringing together diverse thinking to debate the "The Politics of Equity" is timely as the urgency of the work requires us all to rise above divisiveness in order to identify key education priorities in the best interest of students in the South.

Southern Education Foundation (SEF), founded as the Peabody Fund in 1867, works to ensure equity and excellence in education for all students in the South. SEF utilizes research, leadership development, and advocacy to address K-12 reform, higher education restructuring with a commitment to historically black college and universities (HBCUs), and the development of policies and practices that concentrate on student interests across seventeen southern states. Founder George Peabody designed the Peabody fund to educate the emancipated population of Blacks and poor whites following the Civil War. Later, with support from the Slater Fund, Jeanes Foundation, and Virginia E. Randolph Fund, Southern Education Foundation was formed and became a leader in public education within the South. Notable SEF affiliates include First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, W.E.B Dubois, Booker T. Washington, and Benjamin E. Mays.
